This Vortex low relief is part of my ongoing series of paintings on hammered copper.
The spiraling compositions featured in the Vortex paintings express the powerful forces and intensifying energy underlying our climate.
Like the other paintings in the series, Vortex was made by first hammering a sheet of industrial copper to transform its flat reflective surface into ridges, curvatures and rising and falling points to better deflect light. I then cover this gleaming sculpted surface with translucent alkyd paint.
The copper sheets I use are industrial discards, and my compositional point of departure is based the size of the discards that become available from the suppliers. Modern industrial copper mining is extremely damaging to the environment, though once smelted, copper can be recycled indefinitely.
